Our athlete of the month for November is 45 year old runner, John Raney. He joined CrossFit to up his running game - you bet it did! - and brought one of our favorite smiles to the box!
Ones with DL, squats if I don’t have to go fast, kettle bell swings, running and strength days.
Least Favorite WOD:
Ones with pull ups, the rope or a move that requires me to squat down fast.
How/Why did you start CrossFit?
Running was not getting me in the shape I wanted. After not seeing the results in my body shape or my running time, I started asking questions and looking for something else.
What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health, and fitness since starting CrossFit (before/after)?
Shirts and pants fit tighter in areas they had not before CrossFit. Water skiing this summer was effortless and I had the ability to go multiple times in the same day or outing. I ran a back to back 10K & half marathon with zero issues plus a PR on the 10K. Not bad for an old guy with a jacked up knee!
What sort of changes in your life have you experienced from taking on CrossFit that were totally unexpected?
I never expected to enjoy working out. I never expected to wake up and want to go and push my body to the limit every day. For the first time I want to see what my limit is and then exceed it.
There are days for everyone when you just don’t want to work out. How do you handle those?
I don’t have many of these days. If I don’t go it's more because work or life is keeping me from the gym. I enjoy the time at the gym and the workout is what I have to do to get to visit and laugh with everyone. I do have days I just don’t have the gas in the tank so I do what I can and move on the next day. “FIDO” - “F” it, drive on!
Please share with us your favorite CrossFit / CFT moments.
When Big said I was his best friend. Hahaha! Seriously I really enjoy watching someone run through a movement they are great at. We all have one and some lucky ones have more. I’ve been inspired by several members, men and women. I love how this is for everyone. Gender and age mean nothing because you’re really competing against your best time or weight
Any advice for people just getting started?
You’re only competing against your best time or PR. Give it a chance and set realistic goals for yourself. BUY GLOVES!
