As we begin this Summer challenge, I want to share with you my experience tracking my macro-nutirents and using the My Fitness Pal app.
I was not willing to change the way I was eating but I continued to plug in my food anyway. I quickly became discouraged and gave up. I tried a couple more times through out the year, always with the same result. I wasn't willing to sacrifice, so nothing changed.
However, this April I decided it was time. I wasn't seeing progress in my lifts, I was feeling fluffier than usual and with swimsuit season around the corner... well, helllooooo, it's past time to get fit. This time, I was willing to make the changes in my eating habits. And lo and behold ... I was hitting my macros spot on.
SO PUMPED! I noticed immediate - we're talking three days! - changes in my energy level, my clarity of mind, my workouts and my body. I was no longer suffering through an afternoon slump, the weights I was shooting for came easier and the fluffiness was dwindling.
It's amazing how your body responds when you feed it
I had to learn through trial and error what would work in my day. I also asked people I trusted what to eat, and what they ate. It gave me ideas and a blueprint to work with. This challenge is definitely about mental toughness and choices, not unlike our daily workouts.
I know there are days when I don't feel like working out or at least not giving 100%. Eating healthy is the same way. I may have an off day and annihilate a donut or two, but I try to make my good choices for every meal/snack after that.
Now, 4 weeks in, I feel better than I have in while. I continue to notice changes, and to also tweak my macros as I need based on what I'm trying to achieve. I continue to have to make sacrifices, ahem ... I mean, choices ... to put into my body what it's needing, rather than what I think sounds delicious. It's a matter of eating to live, not living to eat.
As you begin using the app,I can assure you that almost all of you will find it a little time-consuming and frustrating. I know from experience.
Don't give up. It gets easier and faster the more you use the app.
Also, put EVERYTHING in. Every nibble of something gets logged in. So make sure that what you're going to nibble is really worth having to log. Sometime I want to reach for a spoonful of peanut butter. Bad idea.
Am I actually hungry? bored? I check my app and see what my body actually needs. Am I low on carbs? protein? fat? Where is my day skewed and how can I fix it? If you don't have the time to enter your food right away make sure you write it down somewhere to enter later. Go all in.
This is going to be a great Challenge, and I'm super excited to see the progress each of us is going to make! Don't hesitate to reach out to someone if you're stuck in a rut, or need some direction about what to eat.
