CROSSFIT GLOSSARY

CrossFit is know for having its own unique vocabulary. Here are some of our favorites.

THE BOX. Where we work out together. A "gym" is full of machines and equipment. You're on your own there and you wait your turn.

We call it a BOX because it's got four walls. The "equipment" is you, the friends cheering you on, and the trained instructor helping you the whole way.

BURPEES.

A cornerstone movement of CrossFit workouts. Starting from standing, bend down and plant your hands. Kick back into a plank position, then jump your legs back in.

Now jump up and clap!

CHERRY PICKING. Selecting which WODs you'll do or skip based on what you like or don't like - think you need, or don't.
Don't cherry pick - trust the coach.
CLEAN & JERK. An Olympic lift where a weighted barbell is lifted from the ground to the shoulders, often squatting under and then standing to recover. After a brief pause, athletes take a shallow dip and then drive upward to propel the bar overhead.

SCALING. Scaling is what makes CrossFit accessible to every body! For every movement in the WOD, you'l have several modification options. You'll "scale" the movement to suit your fitness level and/or mobility restrictions, making you stronger every time.

SNATCH. One of two Olympic lifts where athletes explosively lift a weighted barbell from ground to overhead in one movement.
WALL BALL. Holding a weighted medicine ball, athletes squat down and explosively stand up, throwing the ball toward an eight- or 10-foot target above their heads.

WOD. Workout of the Day. Because it's different every day! Also used as a verb. Did you WOD today?
