A personal challenge to you from Coach Brad. In Gymnastics, Virtuosity has an engaging definition: "Performing the common - uncommonly well." As CrossFitters, that is ultimately what we do. We ARE virtuosos just by showing up. We endeavor to perform the most common movements available to the human body ... and perform them uncommonly well. Simple enough, right? Sure. Until something goes wrong. Maybe it's an injury. Perhaps it's depression. Or a divorce. For me, it was colon bysection surgery. And I found myself back at the starting line. Asking, "What do you do when all your good habits are gone?" For weeks after surgery, I couldn’t WOD. Clean eating? Yeah, if an IV counts. Sleep? Way off, chemically-helped, and interrupted by constant poking and monitoring. But surgery’s hardly the only reason a CrossFitter might find themselves far from the path they’d intended. When life throws a wrench into the works of what we planned, we’re faced with a choice: Give up or dig back in. As your coach, I’d like you to join me in digging back in - no matter where you are when you read this, or why. When I lost the ability to do what I wanted most to do - to conduct my life the way I wanted to - it felt as though I was losing touch with an essential part of my character. And when it was time to come back - to jump into my previous routine, I struggled to do some of the simplest tasks. I wanted life to be back to normal already. And yesterday. It couldn’t happen fast enough. Let’s just say that patience has never been one of my virtues. What I did figure out pretty quickly is the road to recovery was paved by consistency. It wasn’t starting over. But it WAS starting anew. I began by attempting small simple goals I knew I could accomplish within a few days or a week. This consistent effort spilled over into my physical training. And you know what happened? I saw remarkable results. I’m well on my way back from a life-threatening, routine-altering disruption. One attainable goal at a time. And if something has thrown itself in the way of your plans, I want to encourage you to start making your way back. If you’ve been stuck - or feel like you’ve hit a plateau in your growth at the box - I’m here to help you break through it. I’ve even got a plan for you. A Challenge like none we’ve ever done before. Coach B’s Challenge: Your mission is to create TWO goals - one for your body in the BOX, one for your general well-being. Examples? You got it. BOX GOALS: Your first pull-up, push-up, muscle-up, standard box-jump. Your first mile run, your first half-marathon. A PR on an olympic movement. Just name it - we’re going to do it together. LIFE GOALS: Get 8 hours of sleep, drink half your bodyweight in water each day, eat dinner as a family, finally read that book, get the massage you need. This is for you. You deserve, and it’s time you made it happen. Here’s Our Commitment:
THE VIRTUOSITY CHALLENGE BEGINS JULY 13. But you can commit yourself right now. Comment here with your goals or ask your questions. CrossFit Tyler supports you all the way.
